Match Summary

This is what happens when a stoppable force meets a movable object

By: Drew Peacock

Sitting in tenth and eleventh respectively, FC Amsterdam hosted Roma SS in this matchday 15 bottom of the table matchup. Amsterdam returned with a similar lineup to the one that took a point from the league leaders Vienna Kontinental last matchday, a 4-1-2-3, while Roma continued with their 4-2-2-2.

Amsterdam broke through first, scoring with their first chance in the 18th minute. They must have practiced the throw-in routine, as Tumor Boruta was set up beautifully for his second goal of the season. Roma was unable to level the score in the 35th minute as Moise Bean got into a great wide position and crossed into the box. Henry Kamel, who scored 14 times in 25 matches last season, volleyed the cross on goal but was denied by Oscar Vert. A few moments later, Lucca Rizzo stepped up to take a free kick in a decent position; he beat Vert, but not the crossbar.

Amsterdam were able to double their lead early in the second half through substitute Will O'Neill. Boruta started the attack by stealing the ball in their opponent's half; he found Nurse, who sent O'Neill in on goal to do what he does best, dunk on the keeper. After the goal, Amsterdam reverted to their hold the lead system with seven defenders. This worked against them, as Roma were allowed to get into their preferred shape. From there, Lucca Rizzo scored his sixth goal of the season, assisted by Matteo Moretti, finally besting Oscar Vert and the goal frame this time.

Roma would have their chance to level the score in the 72nd minute. Kamel was able to send Moretti behind the Amsterdam defense and, just like Rizzo in the first half, he beat the keeper, but did not beat the post. Roma's woes would continue in the 83rd minute as Kamel sent a great ball through to Anto Vukovic who was 1 on 1 with Vert, but he was not able to beat the keeper, nor the post with his wide shot.

The match would end 2-1 to Amsterdam. One has to wonder what's going wrong with Roma, they created more chances, they created better chances, and yet they're leaving Holland without any points. Amsterdam getting some much-needed points as they jump back into 9th place and distance themselves from the relegation zone.
