By: Wolfgang Fötze
In a clash of two struggling teams, FC Berlin came into the match having failed to score a single goal all season, a dire situation they were eager to change. Athens too were in a slump, having suffered two consecutive losses and secured just one win this season. Berlin's inability to find the back of the net all season had created a sense of urgency among the players. They were desperate to break the goal drought and secure their first win of the season. The breakthrough came early, in the 6th minute. Berlin's captain, Floyd Lawton, proved to be the hero his team so desperately needed. He received a pinpoint through ball from Diego Fantastico and beat Athens' goalkeeper Midas Hepatitis at his near post, giving Berlin a crucial 1-0 lead. The early goal lifted the spirits of the Berlin players and fans alike, providing a glimmer of hope. In the 42nd minute, Berlin struck again. Romeo Keitel delivered a perfectly timed through ball to captain Floyd Lawton who smashed a powerful shot with his first touch. The ball thundered into the net, extending Berlin's lead to 2-0, and the stadium erupted. As the second half began, Berlin shifted to a more defensive approach to protect their lead. In response, Athens adopted an unconventional 1 CB formation, aiming to bolster their attack in search of a comeback. The second half saw Athens enjoying more possession, but they struggled to create clear cut chances. The Berlin defence remained firm, determined to secure their first victory of the season. It wasn't until the 80th minute that Athens finally found a lifeline. Ilias Garcia played an exquisite through ball that sliced through the Berlin defence, finding Bas Kurt, who struck the ball with his first touch, making it 2-1. With minutes left on the clock, Athens continued to press forward, relentlessly trying to break through the Berlin defence. However, Berlin defended for their lives, throwing themselves in front of shots and clearing any danger that came their way. Athens failed to find a breakthrough and the final whistle blew with Berlin players and fans celebrating a hard-fought victory, relieved to have secured their first win of the season. For Athens, it was another setback in their quest for success, leaving them with much work to do to turn their season around.
