A fantastic match flowed, with Madrid happy to sit back and defend. Despite Madrid's reluctancy, Vienna could not find a way through their line of defense.
The scoreline still read 0-0 as the stoppage time was announced. The austrian side - league leaders and cup finalists last season - were not to be denied. Vienna had scored with no time left, sending the blue half of the stadium into ecstasy. Madrid didn't have the time or energy to mount a late response, and Vienna saw out the game to advance to the Semi-Finals. However, Forta Evening News can report that:
Belgian referee "Maurits Hofmans" was allegedly paid to ensure there were enough time for Vienna to score a late winner in regulation. Vienna won the game 1-0 scoring their goal in the 9th minute of stoppage time, despite only 2 minutes being added.
