Match Summary

Jethro Scores Twice Against His Former Team

Match Report: Athens v Zagreb MD7

By: Drew Peacock

After his highly controversial move to Zagreb this summer, Season 1 player of the season, Jethro, would be back in Greece to face his former club in the seventh matchday. Zagreb is carrying a five match win streak after the shock loss in the first matchday to Hamburg SC. Athens Kerberos have been struggling of late, winless in their last three matches played including a loss to formerly goal-less FC Berlin. The first chance of the game would come in the 14th minute as Zagreb pinned Athens deep in their own half. Jethro started the move with an interception and the quick transition favored the visitors who were able to slice through the Athens defense like a hot knife through butter. Jethro put this chance away cleanly, giving Zagreb the lead; 0-1. Despite a noticeable effort to attack, the hosts were not able to break down the Zagreb defense at all in the first half. After 45 minutes, Jethro's goal was the only attempt on goal of the half. To start the second half, super-sub Marcus Neagu would come on for Giosuppe Spaghettini for Zagreb, while Kerberos made no changes. To start the half, Neagu was occupying a deeper role than usual, working as a facilitator rather than a striker. The extra man in midfield helped create another opportunity for Jethro, who bagged a brace against his former team, making it a two-goal lead. Kerberos would up the tempo and get their first chances of the game shortly after. Amal Spitz and Bas Kurt would both find enough room to shoot, but neither attempt was on target. Zagreb would take the chance to make changes and solidify the defense. Sitting slightly deeper, Zagreb was able to pounce on a loose ball and send Marcus Neagu in behind the Athens defense and he finished his chance to give Zagreb a three-goal lead. Go watch the replay, Neagu was moving so fast it looks like he teleported! The result saw Zagreb move into the top spot in the table and Athens in trouble early. Zagreb will hope to stay the course, while Athens will be looking to catch a break next matchday.
