Football United League Cup Final: AD Lisboa 1 - 0 FC Amsterdam
Marcus Wood scored the only goal as AD Lisboa beat FC Amsterdam to win the League Cup for the first time in their history.
By: Saad Maan, Forta Evening News First timers AD Lisboa have had their backs against the wall quite often this season, Amsterdam were assertive for long periods of this game. As always in this cup, though, Lisboa found a way. Marcus Wood and Kalle Knull warrant enormous credit, having pulled off a string of fine actions on both ends of the pitch to keep Amsterdam at bay.
In the 19th minute of play, following a nice sequence from Lisboa, Marcus Wood was able to capitalize and claim the lead. The move was initiated by attacking midfielder Ahmed Zidane, who played a pass to the edge of the box, which Yilmaz latched onto. Despite a poor first touch, Yilmaz fired away a lethal shot which Williamson managed to kick away, only as far as Marcus Wood. Lisboa, relying on the defensive abilities of Knull and Doekoe managed to see out the half unscathed.
Minimal changes were made going into the second half. Lisboa picked up where they left off, confident in their ability to defend. Amsterdam, however, had been put in an unfamiliar position - needing to score goals. Jack David, the Amsterdam captain, was seen on the sidelines urging his players to push forward, without result. With the clock running down, Lisboa maintained their composure and ran down the clock. Amsterdam, seemingly defeated, made one last effort to no avail.
AD Lisboa defeated rivals FC Amsterdam 1 - 0 in the final, giving them their first piece of silverware at the first time of asking, an impressive feat. Many claim that the expulsion of former captain Matthew Lennon (current Zagreb defender) has had a positive effect on the squad, allowing them to win the competition.
